Ok,
so as everyone knows, there was a huge Earthquake in the Tohoku area, followed by a large tsunami that devastated much of the north eastern coast of Japan. A Nuclear Plant in the Fukushima area also took a lot of damage, causing panic all throughout the Tohoku region from the North of Japan down to Tokyo and even farther. Even though there was little to no affect in the air, panic did occur causing many people to flee south or even out of Japan. Classes at Temple University were canceled for about 3-4 weeks causing a somewhat extended semester as well as classes to be affected (i.e. no "real" exams, and etc). In Documentaries class, 90% of the class is working on a group project documenting people (ex-pats who fled Tokyo but came back when the scare went somewhat away, people in the Sendai area that were affected by the tsunami, ex-pats that stayed in the Tokyo area despite the crisis and etc) as a history project for the web. I am working/have been working on Ex-Pats that stayed in Tokyo/fled to the south of Japan but came back. I have interviewed Brent Specht, who is 29 years old, about why he stayed in the Tokyo area amidst the panic and how he was affected in the Tokyo area. I also interviewed a 26 year old English Teacher who fled south for about 2 weeks with his pregnant wife and why he decided to do so. Both have interesting stories on what happened during the situation and why they chose to do what they did.

A-In life I believe that people should find something in their lives that they feel love and feel passionate about.
B-My film will show this action by exploring the mind and lives of street skateboarders in Tokyo, Japan.
C-My film's main conflict is between skateboarders in Tokyo and possible daily conflicts with those that stand in the way of skateboarding.
D-My films POV will be looking into street skateboarders and how they see the world in a different way.
E-I expect my film's structure to be determined by a street skateboarder's life in Tokyo.
F-The subject and POV suggest a style that is ....
G&H-Ultimately, I want the audience to feel informed about street skateboarders in Tokyo and I want them to learn/understand that we aren't what the mainstream media portrays us as. (for example people that are low life's).
2.
A-Subject of the film-
People/group-Tokyo street skateboarders
Environment- Tokyo
B-Expository Information: Why bother to keep skateboarding outside of skateparks when there is often too many daily hassles (i.e. Security, Police and what we call good samaritan citizens who take the law into their hands).
3. The sequence will show a span of 2-2 and half months of the lives of street skateboarders in Tokyo and why we keep doing it no matter what. Information about the positive and negative effects of street skateboarding will be contributed as well as why there is a continuous persuasion to explore Tokyo in a different way. The subjects will explain the persuasion and lifestyle in a different way than how the media might portray it. I expect there to be conflicts such as police, security and concerned citizens that will force us to move on to a different area.
4.
A. 1) Chris Main-friend for as long as I have been in Japan as well as a friend to the other subjects-he is the kind of person that loves what he does and is able to say what is on his mind-Chris is the main subject because we almost always go street skating together even if only for an hours time.
2) Kurahashi "Bainin" Ryuta-friend-One of the first street skateboarders in Japan-Bainin contributes the history of street skateboarding in Tokyo as well as stories of being a tour guide when visiting professionals come from the U.S.
3).
5.
A. The conflict that the characters are know they are playing out is basically anything that can prevent skateboarding at a spot in Tokyo, for example (like previously mentioned) security and police.
B. Everything is basically straightforward, nothing to be unaware of.
C. anything that is mentioned above are really the only issues.
D.
E.
6.
This film will show that the subjects are very passionate about street skateboarding and see it as a lifestyle other than a hobby, which is what most people think about skateboarding. People should care because it will provide background and insight that skateboarders are not just destructive kids or drug addicts.
7.
Since I also skateboard and prefer skateboarding in the city rather than provided parks, I know a lot about the struggles and difficulties of the lifestyle. When I was offered the chance to come to Tokyo, I decided to come mainly because of skateboarding. I have learned that it is difficult, yet fun and very different from the states-in that some (definantly not all) people in Tokyo seem to have irrational views on what we do. I say that because, for example, a friend and I were skateboarding from a skate park to the parking lot where our car was and half way there, 3 people screamed at us to stop...and at the same time there was a car on the sidewalk and bikes flying past us. The people said we were being dangerous but the car was safe basically. I know it is not anywhere near like this everywhere in Tokyo, but these small situations happen somewhat often, which is on of the main reasons I am passionate about making this film. *(I do not want to make the film to plea with Tokyoites (or anyone for that matter) to let us skate anywhere, just inform about who we are).
8.
A. My intended audience is skateboarders as well as anyone who might feel negatively about us.
B. I can expect my audience to know that skateboarders exist and skate the city but not to know why we do it.
C. I assume positive audience prejudices are that we _______________ and negative audience prejudices are that we ONLY deface property, do drugs, are dirty, dangerous and do not care about others.
D. Countervailing facts, ideas, and feelings that my audience needs to experience are______.
9.
Chris Main-25-male-english teacher/student-main subject-
Bainin-34-male-waiter/Nippon car rental employee-subject providing history of street skateboarding in Japan.
10.
A. genre-Informative (?)
B. POV-subjects talking to camera-3rd person (?)
C. No narration..
D. Natural lighting?
E.
F.
G.
11.
12.
A.
B. The story will be told through subjects leading from one point to the next.
C.
D. Important information will emerge through the story telling from the subjects combined with visuals.
E. The climatic sequence would be the security and police (etc) asking the skateboarders to leave. It will be lead up to by telling about the history, and background of street skateboarders in Tokyo.
F. After the "crisis" will be the last explanation which is the subjects giving a statement why they keep skateboarding even with the hassles.
13.
I imagine the film closing with why the subjects keep street skateboarding in Tokyo. All of the subjects are quite passionate about street skateboarding and are not going to stop even with injuries, police, security, concerned citizens, etc.

Final Project topic
My final project documentary will be an informative type of documentary about what it is like to be a "street skateboarder" in Tokyo, Japan. I have 2 of many subjects that I have asked committed as of now. I basically want to show why we skateboard, why at places in cities/towns and not at parks all of the time as well as what kind of situations are faced on a day-by-day basis.

Excercise #2 part #3
This is the interview/conversation at Yoyogi Koen for Intro to Documentaries class. I talked with a skateboarder about Yoyogi Koen about what keeps him coming back, although he is not a consistent regular to the area.
I have to admit, the conversation was slightly awkward, but turned out O.K.

Yoyogi Koen day 2
On my second day of observing Yoyogi Koen I noticed some skateboarders at the entrance, which I find interesting because I've heard a lot of people go there to skate but from what I saw, it isn't really the greatest place to go. I assume that it must be a relaxing place to go to mess around and talk to some friends. All around the park area you can see this. The park has somewhat of a different feel from the city aspect of Tokyo, which is just outside the gates. You don't see much, if any, grass throughout Tokyo...not to mention wide open space.
Yoyogi Koen day 1
For my area of observation I chose to go to Yoyogi Koen. It's somewhat of a cliche area tO choose, but I since I've been in Japan for over a year and never been, I figured I would check it out. Yoyogi park is an interesting area because there are many different types of people there from young to old, people passing through, as well as people playing sports and exercising. I also noticed some things out of the norm (maybe) such as two high school girls talking to a foreigner who was clearly a lot older than them, which is kind of funny to me.
